In today’s society, sex is everywhere. Objectifying ourselves and glamorizing risky sexual behavior is part of the culture. Recently, Internet porn has become one of the most common forms of addiction. Most people that I see live full lives and are active members of society. Their sexual addiction is often secret that they hide from others.
Please note that due to my office policies, I am not able to help those who have actively pursued sexual relationships with minors.
Sadly, there is a stigma around sexual addiction that makes it difficult for some people to reach out for help. I provide a safe, confidential and judgment-free environment where people can heal from their addiction. All counseling is individual, in-person counseling in my Irvine offices.
When people first visit me for sexual addiction, it is often because they have had a crisis that resulted from their addiction (e.g. their romantic partner discovered their addiction). The first stage of therapy is often to help them through this crisis, and to further limit the possible future consequences.
The next stage of treatment involves helping people understand themselves better. Often sexual addiction can be rooted to past trauma or poor past relationships. The healing process helps people explore their inner world and come to understand what are the underlying causes of their addiction.
I never see the addiction as the person. Most of the time people spend in therapy is often not directly talking about their sexual addiction. I believe in the innate goodness of all human beings. In my experience, when given the right support and care, people's addictions will naturally fall away as their life gradually fills with enriching activities and relationships.
Your participation or the details of what you share in therapy will never be revealed to others. There are a few important exceptions as required by law. Examples of these exceptions are suspected child abuse; elder abuse and imminent threats of physical harm to yourself or others. You can view my full privacy policy here.
Many people are scared that they will have to reveal all their most shameful secrets if they see me. While it can be helpful to be completely open, I encourage people to gradually open up, as they feel comfortable. You may want to read my article on the myths of therapy.
As part of my commitment to ensuring you receive the best possible care, I offer a free 30 minute telephone consultation. I am happy to answer any questions you may have about my services.
